CAPITAL: Nelspruit Breathtaking escarpment of the Mpumalanga Province
MEANING: Mpumalanga translates from isiXhosa to mean ‘place of the
rising sun’
TEMPERATURES: Average summer: 15–32° C; Average winter: 1–17° C
CULTURE: A diversity of cultures, and perhaps of the most colourful traditional communities in the country, populates this area. The town Dullstroom resounds with Boer War battles that raged between the South African Republic and the British Empire from 1899–1902.
ATTRACTIONS: This is literally ‘Big Five’ country. Also known as the ‘land of contrasts’ because of the way the dramatic topography of the escarpment plays off against the open-air splendours of the bush of the Lowveld. The landscape is flecked with trout-rich rivers, trees, hiking trails and cultural villages.

‘Big Five’ refers to five of Africa’s greatest animals, namely the Rhino, Cheetah, Elephant, Buffalo and the Lion - all found in South Africa.
