The polo estate endurance team Natasha and Bridgid take first and second prizes

Leandra 2009 Endurance RaceA story about a horse called Nyuans

A.K.A Nousense.

He is a small little chestnut with a white blaze and 4 white socks, he grew up in Botswana and came to South Africa to become an endurance horse, he was backed by his owners hubby but was sent to me, as little Nuyans packed quite a dynamite buck and got a lot of people on the ground with out them wanting to be there. “As they say………..dynamite comes in small packages.”

He was sent to me to try help.

I slowly became very fond of this little horse but unfortunately the owner’s hubby gave him to friends of his who owns a top Arabian showing stud farm as they were now trying to get into the endurance scene, but as I was not finished with Nyuans they struggled with him, they had him for quite some time. I always believed that Nyuans and I would cross paths again some day.

Then one morning the owner got a call saying that they don’t want Nyuans any more as he has a chip in his foot and he has skew legs and he’s just never going to be a winner so the owner had him dropped off on our family farm in Dullstroom.

When he climbed out of the horse box and we put him in the paddock with the other horses, he picked up his tail and galloped across the green field with his main flowing in the wind and I said to myself ‘welcome home boy!!!’ I then turned and said to the owner…..’He will be fine’………. and the owner just smiled back.

I then started working with Nuyans and with a lot of patients managed to find out why he was bucking and why he was not such a happy horse at that point.

And well, Nuyans did his first race with me at Alma and we took it slow as I have been out of the endurance scene for a year or so and he had been retired dew to the stories of his legs being to skew and the chip that causes him to go lame… but he took it like a pro and I knew we were gaining ground but I did not realise how fast though till the next race that was about 17days after his first race. We did the Leandra race where we managed to improve our time by about an hour and a half over the distance of 80km and came 2nd with the time difference between 1st and 2nd being split seconds, and the best thing of all the owner Natasha got the first prize and she was riding little Nyuans’ dad named Chanteur Ibn Raij,{Number 299} one of the top endurance horses around. Nyuans handled it really well and showed no sign’s of being lame, tired or unhappy at all.

We are all hoping that little Nyuans is going to become a top little horse, and after all this little horse has a very big heart. So lets all hold thumbs and watch this little horse do really really well. And as the odds are not on his side, I believe with my all that he can be one of the best, and if one believes with your heart and sole you can achieve anything you believe in.

And there for I would just like to say don’t ever judge a book by its cover.

I would like to thank a very special man by the name of Duan Coetzee as he has helped me achieve one of my dreams to take Nyuans to the top as Mr Coetzee has kindly sponsored The Polo Estate endurance team, funds that are greatly needed to achieve this, and a vehicle.
